Prayer is Always Available

I still always chuckle when I hear that old saying, “As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in schools.” Of course, this joke is aimed at poking fun at the often misunderstood “separation of church and state” practice, which many use to keep prayer out of our public school system. However, there is an underlying truth to the joke, and that is that Prayer is always available to us, no matter what our circumstance.

You see, we serve and worship a loving God who desires a relationship with His children. When we were told to “pray without ceasing,” He makes that possible for each and every one of us every second of the day, 24/7/365!!! Our God is “Omnipresent.” This means He is everywhere, and at all times. As Jonah found out, there is nowhere you can go and be out of touch with God, not even in the belly of a whale in the depths of the ocean. He is always accessible.

Yet all too often, outside of Sunday morning service or our life group meetings or before meals, we only think to pray when things are not going so well, usually as a last resort. We just don’t seem to realize what a powerful asset we have in this relationship with our creator. And communication is the key to this relationship. Prayer is the key.

Think back to when you were in school, whether it was last week, or many years ago. Just think how much better you would have done on your tests if you had prayed before studying, prayed while studying, and prayed after studying. Throw in a prayer about your test the night before as you went to bed to be well rested. Finally, you’d say a quick prayer in the morning about the test as you get ready, and yes, the all-important prayer just before the test. Let’s not forget a prayer of relief once the test was over. How much more focused would you be? How much more at ease would you be? How much more prepared would you be?

Your test is neither too big nor too small for the Creator of the Universe to pay close attention to.

The test may be on the job, in school, at church, in your home. You may be at the library, at a friend’s house, at a client’s office, or a job interview. It really does not matter because He is there with you. Your test is neither too big nor too small for the Creator of the Universe to pay close attention to. He is never too busy for you and your prayers are always heard.

Lift all your joys, sorrows, concerns, griefs, and trials to your Heavenly Father in prayer. Do it first, do it often, do it always. Amen.
